I have a 1993 bmw 325i with an auto.  it has about 172K miles and i have not had a problem with it yet.  today while driving, i got the highway and i felt it sort of dying, and then i went drove about 50 yards and it died again.  it did not recover from this and  stayed stranded.  the engine turns and all and it sounds like it is about to start and then after maybe a split second it dies so it never fully turns over.  i have gas in it, i was thinking that it might be the fule pump, if it is, how hard is it to change? is it located in the tank? If you do not think it is or need some more information please email me.  thanks nathan

Sounds like a bad fuel pump. It is located under the rear seat. It is not hard to replace at all. Just remove the rear seat (back first) then the bottom and right underneath the bottom of the rear seat you will see a circular shaped cover. Underneath the cover is the fuel pump.

Hope that helps.

Answer
most the e36 ive opened up only have one it is under the driver side. If you have two it may be that your car has 2 however I have never seen this. The fuel filter is located underneath the car. Here is a link to some pictures of how to remove the fuel filter. Hope this helps.
