Buick/Olds: aurora consol repair, thumb knob, thumb button

Question
the plastic cover in the consol has cracked with age and broken out a piece of the cover.
How does the shift knob detach from the shifter?
The various screws that secure the consol at both ends of the consol are evident but the shifter is the limiting factor for me.

Answer
Bob

There are normally two factors in removing the shifter knob. It depends on the year of your car. Usually, if you pull the thumb button right out, there is a set screw inside the thumb knob hole that will release the handle. Other times, the handle is secured with lock washer which you will not be able to access unless you have a tool especially for this. If you do, simply push the tool up under the shifter knob and press towards the dash, the knob will fly right off.
