Buick/Olds: 2000 Park Avenue Security system, buick park avenue, security light

Question
I parked the car. Locked with keyless control and went shopping.  Returned unlocked car and put key in ignition. Key will not turn.  Did I do something to engage security system?  Car has only 23,000 miles on it.  2000 Buick Park Avenue

Answer
Hey Chuck...how about that Buick...

Well, I have seen this before, at the dealership. When you locked the car you used the keyless remote, and you also used to to UNLOCK the car too...right?

assuming you did, your car should have started fine. Now, when the security system is engaged the key itself should still turn, but the security light should come on and disengage the fuel system. The fact that your key will not turn makes me wonder about the ignition...have you been able to get the key to turn since? One sure fire way to tell if this IS the security system is to unplug the battery from the rest of the car and LEAVE it unplugged for 1 full hour. Then re-attach the power supply, go in and try to start the car. If the key still will not turn, it is NOT the security system. If the key will now turn, but the car will not start, then it is the security system and leaving the car set for 5 minutes more will allow the "theftlock" system to reset. Then you should be able to start her up.

If after all that, the key itself will still not turn, and you make sure it is in all the way and you push in to the steering column as you turn...then it soulds like a real ignition problem and you will need to have the dealership take a quick look, they have a tool to turn the ignition without a key and they can see if it will start. This part will still be under warranty, it's covered for 5 years or 100,000 miles.

If you need more help or more info....drop a line...Thanks
