Buick/Olds: 1986 Park Avenue Transmission problems, transmission problems, park avenue

Question
Hi Harold, thanks for your input on my starter issue from earlier in the week.

My New issue is that my Buick of 193,000 km's just started to slip gears today when pulling into my drive way. I pulled out and drove down the block to see if it was my imagination but sure enough, it was coasting as if the car was in neutral and every now and then would catch for a few seconds.

What is the problem and any idea on a ballpark cost estimate (hundreds or thousands)to have it repaired ?

Thanks for you time.

Answer
It could be alot of things causing your trans to slip depending on what gear or gears it is slipping in. The first thing you need to do is check the trans fluid level. If it is low, top it off and see if it still slips and also check for leaks. If it is not low, then you have a serious problem that will probably require rebuilding or replacing the trans. Cant really comment on price range because of the many diferent things that could be wrong.
