Cadillac: 96 SLS stopped running, pcm 5, fuel pump relay

Question
I have a 96 SLS and on the way home we were driving 75 mph and all of a sudden the gear indicator lights started flashing, the car slowed down, started to loose power steering, pressed the accelerator no power.  The car stopped and on the display it stated anti-theft system warning, car may not re-start.  Tried starting the car and it cranked fine but would not start. Any idea's?

Answer
First lets check the computer for CODES:

1. Ignition ON. Engine OFF.

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and WARMER(^) buttons on your climate control panel for 3 seconds and release them.

3. On your fuel data display you will see letter and number combinations appaering along with the word or symbol CURRENT (C) or HISTORY (H) displayed with each code that appears.

4. The display will stop at PCM?

5. Tell me EXACTLY EVERYTHING that displays on the fuel data display until it stops at PCM?.

6. Turn OFF ignition.

The next thing you need to do, Provided there are NO CODES in the computer is to see if you are getting spark to the spark plugs as you try and start the car.

Next, we can listen for the fuel pump to run via:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.

If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump..
