Nissan Repair: Speedometer, vehicle speed sensor, vehicle speed sensor vss

Hi Von,
I just got a 95 nissan altima and the speedometer has stopped working.I donot have alot of money to spend on the car could you please help me out in this situation.What could be the problems and if I could fix it myself or if I have to take it to a mechanic how much would I have to spend approximately.

Your problem is probably the  vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and it is located on the transmission.  Open the hood and look down at the firwall on the driver's side and you will see the sensor.  It takes a ten millimeter to get it off, if memory serves me correctly.  Buy the new one and you will know what you are looking for.  The sensor should run about $60 bucks.  A Haynes Manual, at $20 bucks, is a good investment.
