Dodge: 92 Dodge Ram 4x4 3/4 ton deisel purchase, dodge ram 4x4, kelley blue book

Question
I'd like to buy truck that can haul a 12000 lb. load perhaps 400 miles a year.  I've found a '92 Dodge Ram with a Cummins deisel engine.  I went to check it out; it had been 3 days since it was last started and the temp. was in the 20's. It started immediately and ran like a top. It sounded smooth and not very noisy for a diesel, with very little exhaust smoke. It drove well with no problem shifting and changing speeds. It was tight and no rattles. Everything seemed to be working , incl. the air conditioner. There is rusting out below diver's side door but other than that, there was little anywhere else and very few dents and scratches.  The downside: a lot of miles (414,000). Previous owner, who I talked to, just spent over $800 on brake and wheel work. Transmission overhauled at 150,000. Motor never touched, since new has been using a synthetic oil and changing regularly.

The question I have is: is it worth the $4,000 asking price with 414,000 miles?  Or is it too risky with such high mileage?

Answer
Keith,
That is a lot of money for the truck for that many miles.I know the truck seems tight but you can never determine what problems it will start giving you.I would recommend pulling a car fax.on the truck because it will tell you if it has had any major problems.Kelley blue book only goes back to 1994.With a vehicle that old depends really on how much a person (you) wants it.I would call your local banker and see what the actual value if any is on the truck.I know this is not much help but it is a good place to start before putting that much money into a 1992 model truck. But still it may be the best buy of your life. You can also tell them to let you take it to your mechanic and let him look it over for you.
