Dodge: Dakota V6, timing chains, gas mileage

Question
I would like your opinion about the 3.9 L V6 used in Dakotas. I just bought a 2000 Dakota w/ the V6 and has 65K miles. The engine runs fine, but gas mileage is poor (17 mpg) 50:50 mix of city/hwy. It's 2wd automatic regular cab.

How long can I expect this engine to last without a rebuild? I heard something about timing chains about this engine. Are they a weak link? What are some other things that typically go wrong with this particular engine?

Does the 4 speed automatic hold up well in this vehicle.

I change my oil every 3000 miles and I'm easy on vehicles.

Answer
Scotty,
Everyone has their opinion on engines, cars.and such.If you keep the truck serviced it should do you years of service. My dad has a Dakota with 150000 miles on it and has never had to do anything major to it.Timing chains are something that need to be replaced due to wear, but they don't wear out over night. The 4 speed automatic is a good transmission. You can buy a lemon in anything you buy.As far as the gas mileage it probably wouldn't hurt to service the engine unless the people or dealership you bought it from has just performed the service, also the fuel filter.
