Dodge: magnum intake, mass air flow sensor, air flow sensor


Question
I have a magnum rt ('05 of course), only problem is I can't settle for 340 hp. Only mods so far are flowmaster 40 muffs and a k&n drop-in air
filter. I want to modify the intake by running a 3" alluminum flex tube from behind the grill into the bottom of the air box. If I point the
duct straight toward the grill it should provide a significant ram air effect. My only concern is with moisture in the intake, but the duct would be high up in the grill (just below hood) and recessed about 6 inches.  Puddles wouldn't be a problem, and I can't imagine much rain coming straight through the grill and making it back into the duct. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it takes a significant amount of water to hydrolock an engine (a gulp, not merely a
mist). Besides I know that some engines are  water injected. I don't really think I have anything to worry about other than having to clean and re-oil the k&n more often. Of
course I could eliminate the whole water issue by aiming the duct downward instead of straight out. I'd still get cold air, but I'd hate
to lose the ram effect. Also, as a side note, the car doesn't have a mass air flow sensor, but I'm pretty sure the O2 sensor would provide
adequate adjustments. I'm thinking I'll check the plugs after some miles for signs of a lean burn. Please tell me what you think.

It is possible to do the project the way you mentioned.But i will tell you that it is not a good idea to have any moisture get into the engine.The way the engines are designed today are pretty much all computerized and any tampreing with the system can cause all sorts of sensors to misread.If you do it make sure you leave enough drop in the duct to where the water will not shoot directly into the engine or air filter because with a heavy rain and just driving around 55 m.p.h. can cause water to puddle up in the tube.This is just my opinion!but again it will work.Thanks RamMan
