I have 01 Ram 2500 5.9 Cummins. Few months ago it began hesitation every once in a blue moon during acceleration. Typically at first start off or about 40 MPH. The other day it started at 75 MPH. It would be like you let off accelerator and slow to top speed of 45 or 50 MPH. Tap the pedal.. etc.. eventually would kick back in and run fine. Go a few miles and it would do it again. Still starts and runs fine but once it begins acting up it is crazy for a while. Has new fuel filter 122000 miles. I have had it since it was brand new.

Hvae had couple people tell me TPS but have also had some say it is inside tranny? I order TPS online and of course it is wrong one. I did find my TPS under the hood but dealership says I cant get just TPS will have to get entire vavlve body for 450.00 OUCH. ANy clues?

Thank you,
Jamie

Jamie,
Has the engine light came on?Have you checked for water in the fuel?If the engine light has not come on my best guess is fuel related.Usually a sensor will cause the light to come on.Any amount of water in the fuel tank will cause this. And could also be a vacuum leak which would not cause the engine light to come on.

There is no check engine light on however if I cycle the key three times I get P1693 which I was told was a companion code.

This truck is supposed to havea "water in fuel" light, which it does and has never came on. I clicked open the water drain on fuel filter canister and I only got what apears to be fresh diesle.. only little though.

Thanks again for any more information on this situation.

PS The TPS came in today and was wrong one. The TPS is on the side of the intake not inside transmission pan as someone else had told me. I don't know if any of that makes any difference.

Answer
Jamie,
I posted this question on a forum for diesel engines.I will respond when i hear something. It could be the throttle position sensor, but like i said i would not just change parts yet.Hang in there i'll find something out!RamMan
Jamie,
Sorry it took me so long to reply again.I talked to someone who said the problem was most likely the throttle position sensor which is called the APPS.He said pull the codes again and look for a code of P0216.This is the code for the injection pump timing.
