GM-GMC: problems w/ a fuel pump, fuel pump relay, 1997 chevy 1500

Question
i drive a 1997 chevy 1500 w/ a 4.3 v-6 5spd 4wd. my problem is that the fuel pump  normally makes a whirrring  sound  just before the startin the truck, but now it doesn't,  is the fuel pump bad or is it the fuel pump relay?  if it's the relay, i' looked under the hood w/  no  luck tryin to loicate the relay. accordin to the chilton's manual, the relay should be right night next to the coolant reservior
on the passenger side of the firewall, but i never saw it lookin in that general area. could the relay  be located  somewhere else, if so, where would it be located?  and  if it's the pump, how much would it run to get a new one, and  how  hard  would it be to replace the pump ?

Answer
I take it the truck does not start ?
The fuel pumps are very common problem on these . You will have to do the following :

Take all the fuel you can possibly suction out of tank
You have two clamps on the gas tank
Loosen the clamps : using W-D 40 on them prior to trying to loosen
Use a floorjack and a piece of plywood apprx 2'x2 or whichever size fits your tank . just enough to support the tank .

Loosen the screw that holds the fuel neck
watch out for your fuel lines as well .you may have to loosen them

No you have the tank down disconnect fuel lines going to top of tank They make a special tool for this
The fuel pump is in the tank . Depend on when the vehicle was built !
