GM-GMC: What engine is in my sons truck, side exhaust manifold, custom exhaust systems

Question
This is a gasoline engine so if I have made a mistake, I apoligize.

My son bought a 1973 c-20 3/4 ton Chevy truck.  The seller told him he had installed a Camaro engine into the truck.  It looks like a basic V-8.  The exhaust manifold on the drivers side has the flange fitting about 2/3rds of the way back toward the end of the truck.  The passenger side exhaust manifold has the flange fitting at the complete back of the engine.

It doesn't appear that the motor mounts have been modified.  My son was 700 miles away from me when he bought the truck with my former wife.  He was 16 at the time and doesn't know a tappet from a teapot.

Since he bought it (1.5 years ago)he came to visit me and I have had to replace the radiator, (small leak) the alternator (worn out) and the battery.  I want to replace the exhaust system but I don't know where the engine number is.

I realize this is a gas ehgine so if it's out of your area of expertise, I'm sorry.

Thanks for your time.
Most sincerely.

Answer
Don,

The diesels have their numbers cast into the driver's side block skirt, just ahead of the transmission bell housing.

I realize that this does you no good.  My father had a 1973 Impala with a 350.  The passenger side manifold exited out the rear and the driver's side manifold exited in the center because it connected to a crossover pipe.  This was the first vehicle that I put dual exhaust on and Sears sold kits to accomplish the task.  I remember it well.

Anyhow, there really is no way to be sure what engine you have  based on the description of exhaust manifolds.  The manifolds will interchange with a number of engine displacements, be it small or big block engines.

My advice would be to take the vehicle to a muffler shop that has a pipe bender and get a custom exhaust system installed.  Shop around for prices and warranty.  I had several custom exhaust systems installed in vehicles for different customers and that was always the best solution.
