Honda: 98 honda civic, computer board, engine computer

Question
QUESTION: check engine light came on....took to dealer. they say it's the computer board...put new one in and now they say not sure if the new computer board is bad or if it's their equipment....what are some questions I should be asking?
ANSWER: It's difficult to say what questions to ask without further info ,was the car running ok ?What codes if any were present? Also if the dealer can't tell you if its the engine computer or their equipment they should not charge you.i think I would take the car to another dealer or shop with diagnostic equipment. Also ask if there are any bulletins for that specific symptom.

QUESTION: Thank you for that info. Spoke with rep @ honda dealer. The computer board is now in and working fine. They wanted to keep the car over night because when the new board was connected the engine light came on again. They reset it, drove it; the light didn't come back on, but they wanted to keep it over night so they could start it up this morning (implied this is standard procedure). So I let them keep it. This morning they tell me the distributor assembly is bad and this is what caused the computer board to go out. Now it's an additional $390 on top of the $895. Could the distributor assembly have caused the computer board to go out and how common a problem is this.

Answer
I wont tell you it's impossible but I would be suspicios.I would suspect the distributor was the problem in the first place, sometimes they would rather sell you a computer and a distributor instead of telling you they were mistaken. Also you can get a computer in ebay and a brand new distributor for 100 to 150 dollars instalation is simple and should not take more than an hour.If the car was mine I would be curious to see how the car runs with a new dist and the old computer.
