Honda: 1986 honda prelude si, 1986 honda prelude, airflow sensor

Question
Hi,
I have an 86'prelude 2.0 si. It has 130,000 miles on it and it is a 5 speed standard. While accelerating to get onto the highway the engine cuts in and out like sputtering and loss of power then power back up and down repetitively. Was just doing it during harder acceleration, (ie getting on highway) but now does it all of the time. When  it is first started up and still cold has all power and wonderful pickup. Once a little warm starts acting up.Car idles perfectly with no fluctuation at all. I can rev the car in nuteral and it is fine sometimes and sometimes it bogs down almost as if not enough or too much gas to engine. I have replaced fuel pump, injectors, distributor, rotor, wires, plugs, o2 sensor, coil, distributor diaphram, fuel filter. still doing it and getting progressively worse.  this was not happening until I took it in to have the drains for my sunroof unclogged. Do you have any suggestions as to what it could be? Timing, electrical short, anything? Thank you for your time.

Brad

Answer
It seems to me that you are taking care of business on your own.  Did you check gaps on all plugs?  Are they in spec.?  What about the airflow sensor?  If it idles perfectly, but cannot "keep up" under heavier acceleration, then it may be because the computer thinks you are still at idle.  Get yourself a Helm manual at:  (unless you already have one)

This will help you troubleshoot problems.  It's what the Honda Certified Technicians use.
Good luck Brad,
