Nissan Repair: Clutch/Release Bearing Replacement, clutch action, clutch pressure plate

Question
Dear Sir,
Everytime I engage (depress) and the clutch pedal keep it engaged I get a really rough running sound, I think the release bearing is history.
I want to replace it by dropping the transmission rather than removing the engine.
Are there any tips or tricks that will make this job easier.
Secondly is the Release bearing the same as a throwout bearing?
Thirdly, do you know if the Clutch kits (Fenco etc) also include the release bearing or does the release bearing need to be ordered separately?
Thanks

Answer
Chris,

I do not know the year of your car or if it is front wheel drive or rear wheel drive.  But, as a general rule of thumb I like to go with Nissan parts since I know they fit.  Now, this is especially true when changing a clutch.  I hate doing those things more than once.  I would drop the transmission and do a complete clutch refresh to include a clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bushing.  Nissan's are known for the front bearing on the transmission going dry and getting noisy and in some instances causing the engine to get rough in bad cases.  So, while the transmission is out check the input by turning it by hand while the transmission is in neutral.  Lastly, I would buy a complete clutch kit that contains all the parts I mentioned.  You will need an alignment tool for the new clutch and be sure to purchase new clutch cover bolts and be really sure to torque them with a torque wrench and go slowly and evenly all the way around until they are at the specified torque.  I like to use Locktite blue to keep them from backing out once the clutch is installed.  Also, bleed the clutch master and slave cylinders with Ford High Performance Brake Fluid and the clutch action will be excellent.
