Mazda: Miata, design changes, crankshaft

Question
I am considering getting a Miata for the wife's Birthday.
Any years or models that should be avoided? What are the prebuy items that I should be aware of? Thank you.

Answer
All model years are good.  The only exception being some 1990 and some 1999 models which had crankshaft design issues with a small number of vehicles.  Not to be avoided since the problems were limited but, cautious.  90-97 are the original design to be sought after.  99 through 2005 second generation with design changes yet still true inside to the original idea and engineering.  2006+ is a complete redesign and built carrying over the concept but,  not much else so as to compete with the other manufacturers.  All three versions are great, long term well and over engineered exceeding all expectations.  The oldest to date that we work on has 468,000 miles (1993) .
