Mazda: 92 Mazda Miata wont start, mazda miata, jumper wire

Question
Car was running great when it was parked over two years ago.  Have replaced battery and it is cranking good but will not start. Have sprayed gas directly into spark plugs and it starts and runs for a few seconds.

Answer
Sounds like the in tank fuel pump is not working.  Try disconnecting the supply fuel line (the one that feeds the front of the fuel rail),(be ready with a container to catch the fuel) turn the ignition to run and see if fuel flows.  If so the pump is working and the injection system has an issue.  If not the pump is bad.  One other, not so common pump issue is the fuel relay.  It can be heard clicking drivers side under dash.  Another means of testing the system is to force run it by placing a jumper wire between F/P and GND in the diagnostics plug box located under hood above the drivers front wheel.

Most of the time when the pump is bad it's bad and must be replaced.  On occasion I have pressurized the tank with the key on the supply line open and forced fuel through it actually bringing it back to life.  It is after all a small electric motor and when left in one position for long periods can corrode and form a dead spot on the windings.  Forcing fuel through it make it spin past the dead spot.  Your safest bet is to replace it if it shows the above failure.

New HO pump unit costs $169, you must bench the assembly and replace the pump unit.
