Mazda: logos, international sign language, rear defroster

Question
Hello! Good day! Im a young man from the
Philippines.
My elder brother gave me his car, it was
Mazda Familia, He gave it to me because he
knows i know how to drive. But after that
he suddenly leaved.
My question are: What does the gadget
near the aircon switch indicates for a) a car
with an arrow pointing toward it? b) a man
sitting with an arrow pointing towards his
feet? Coz i dont know the function of it, i
just know the function of the air-con switch
where you can make it hotter or cooler.
And the last what does the A.C. indicate
(the button beside the air-con
adjustment)?
   Thanks a lot sir!

Answer
Hi George and thanks for the question.  So much for international sign language.  The gadget you are referring to is the air directional control for the airconditioner/heating/defrost system.  The normal meanings for the symbols are as follows:
Arrow pointed at man means the air is coming out of the dash outlets only, Arrow pointed at feet means air coming out of the underdash outlets, arrow pointed at both means just that, air coming out of both outlets.  There are normally two other arrows, one pointing at car which means air coming through dash/windshield outlet which is normally used for defrosting inside of car and one that looks like a window with grid lines which is also for defrosting and MAY turn on rear defroster if vehicle is so equipped.  Since I have no idea what a Familia model is I am only assuming that these symbols mean the same thing.  If this is confusing and/or misleading please feel free to let me know.  Best of luck to you.  Bud
