Mercedes: Random acceleration, mercedes benz, cruse control

Question
I bought a 1988 300E Mercedes Benz about a year and a half ago.  The car only has 62,000 miles on it now, just 4,000 more than it did when I bought it.  The car has randomly accelerated at a fast pace, faster than the car normally speeds up, on me and both of my parents while we were driving on several occasions, shortly after the purchase.  It doesn't stop accelerating even if you press down on the breaks.  I was able to get it to stop by putting to car in neutral which then the engine red line for a split second then went back down to a normal idle and from there I was able to put it back in gear and continue driving with out any problem.  My father thought it may have had something do with the cruse control, so I haven't used that since nor has the random acceleration happened since either.  I was just wondering if you might know what may have caused this?

Answer
Michael,
I would agree that it probably caused by the speed control. I in fact have had the cruise control engaged and forgot and while in traffic at about 40 mile per hour had it pick up with the speed. The control has a roll position and when you hold it during deceleration it will remember that speed.
It is als pretty easy to engage it by mistake or get the setting screwed up.

The instructions say it should not be engaged when traffic is heavy or the road condition require quick changes.
I have not used my in years, because it had developed a hunting issue. When engaged at road speed it works reasonably so long as the vehicle in under load, but when one starts down hell, there is an increasing tendency to surge.
Not worth the effort or expense to replace the module.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck
Robert
