Mercedes: Engine top, bolts and nuts, gasket seal

Question
How do I remove the engine top of a mercedes benz 115 series 230/4 1976 model.I want to send it to engineering and thereafter replace the top gasket.

Answer
Because I do not know your level of expertise in working on engines. Please understand that these are just guide lines.
I recommend locating a Mercedes maintenance manual that includes this year and model vehicle. If you can find a local mechanic who has done this type of work before, I would also suggest that you spend a little time talking with him/her.

Because each model has some specific sequences of removal and reinstall. In general, if you are wanting to remove the head it will require removal of the exhaust and intake manifold. The valve cover and any other accessories will need to be removed. Make sure to mark all bolts and nuts for proper reinstall. The cam cover will also need to be removed if it interfaces with the valve cover. If there is a timing chain the cam gear will need to be removed. Once the accessories and covers are removed, the head bolts will be visible.Be sure to check the bolts for length to make sure they are returned to the correct position during re install.
Depending on your expertise, you will need to locate the proper bolt torques and tightening sequences as this will determine the proper head gasket seal.
On a vehicle of this age, there can be a problem with ringing of bolts particularly the exhaust bolts. Just be sure to proceed with caution.

Good Luck
