Mitsubishi: Low Idle, I think, engine oil viscosity, oil pressure sending unit

Question
Have a 2004 4 cyl Galant with 46,500 miles.

The oil light comes on at idle but, only after the car has been driven for ~20 miles or so.

The car in gear, idles at about 550 rpm, I understand that should be at about 850 rpm.

So, I think the problem is low idle.... how the heck do you adjust the idle on this thing?

If it is not the idle, what else could it be?

Thanks in advance,

Dean

Answer
Hi Dan,

I feel it may be a bad oil pressure sending unit provided there is enough oil it there! Double check, engine off, of course. Make sure there the check engine light is not on when it's running, that would indicate a sensor problem. Also, make sure you have a good brand name oil with the right SAE rating designed for that engine. Oil viscosity thins as it gets hot. It will say what oil you need on a sticker on the hood. You have been changing your oil ever 3,000 to 5,000 right? It's not the original oil from the factory... LOL

You can not adjust the idle, it's handled by the computer and actually, 500 to 750 is ok. 850 would be in neutral for a standard shift.
