Mitsubishi: Mitsubishi Galant, mitsubishi galant, positive cable

Question
Installed new battery now car will not idle. It starts fine but if I restarted it then the rpm's drop down below 1000 and engine shuts off.
If I wait like an hour it starts fine again. No check engine light on. Batery was old and leaking fluid from the top, negative terminal was cover with acid and white stuff so I replace the terminal and the cable too. Positive terminal was in good condition.
Thanks! Robert

Answer
Hi Robert,

Even though there is no CEL on, I suggest taking it to a shop and have it scanned. There are so many sensors that need to work properly to make cars run today that I am afraid to have you start throwing parts at it which might be a massive waste of time and money. This seems to me to be a tempeture related issue. Possibly even a bad computer that may have accidently been damaged due to the battery change.

One last thing. When the battery was leaking at the top, this is an indication of over charging or under charging. Do this for me... Start the car then remove the positive cable from the battery. If the car dies, you need an alternator... Worth a shot. If it continues running, take it and have it scanned. See what we might have in there. Oh, and by the way, Cottman Transmission will do this for free if you have one close to you.
