Mitsubishi: Mitsubishi Expo problems, air flow sensor, catalytic convertor

Question
I have a 1994 Mitsubishi Expo 2.4 liter. Automatic
My car shuts off as I am driving, I notice RPM gauge starts to peak between high and low and it will just shut off. Sometimes it will start back up and again and shut right off again. The if I wait a bit it will start.Usually about 20-30 min. I have had the catalytic convertor replaced and also the air flow sensor i believe it is. None of this has fixed the problem. My mechanic suggests it may be my timing belt. Another says no because I would not be able to drive the car if it were the timing belt. I am at a lost. Please can you help.
Thank You!
Tam

Answer
Hi Tam,

Yeah, this is not the timing belt. This will be a tough one. First, I need to know if your check engine light is on... If it is, it will tell us how to approach repairing this problem. There are a few places that will "scan" your car for free. I suggest taking it to a Cottman Transmission shop. Though the problem is not likely transmission related they will be able to tell you which DTCs are present, if any. Sometimes, a code will be present but the "check engine light" will not be on. Please have your car scanned and write down the code numbers and I will be able to help you further. This is the first step. Once I have this info then we can easily repair this.
