Nissan: engine seal, cv joints, nissan maxima

2000 Nissan Maxima. I just replaced both front end cv joints and my mechanic said my engine seal is leaking. He said first to not worrie because the leak is small.Just to keep checking the oil every gas up. It is making a mess in my garage and it smells.

Second, he said to fix it the entire transmission must come out to get to the engine seal.  Is this correct?

How many miles are on this car? This car is not really know for a rear main oil leak. First check the front crank seal and the OPS sending unit, they leak all the time and can send most techs in the wrong direction. They are cheap and easy to replace. If the rear main seal is leaking you will need to pull the trans to fix it but its not that big of a deal.
