Oldsmobile/Buick: 1994 Old cutlass climate control intermittent, climate control unit, olds cutlass

In my 1994 Olds Cutlass Conv. the climate control sometimes has power (display is on), sometime it is not and sometimes the display is on and I cannot change the settings and other times I can.  At best I can control the heat, although it oftens goes full blast and I have no control.  The air conditioner never works.  Do you have any idea what the problem may be and how to fix it?  I just purchased this car and the prior owner had no problems with this system.  It just seems to have a mind of its own.

Way out of my area of expertise . In short .. have a qualified ASE Certified technician/GM dealership diagnose the problem . Sounds to me like the climate control unit may be faulty , possibly needing to be replaced.
