Pontiac: over heatting 2000 grand am gt, pontiac grand am gt, pontiac grand am

Question
I have a 2000 pontiac grand am gt, 3.4 V6. Since about may I have noticed that my car has been somewhat overheating. As long as I am driving it, it stays just a notch over 200. But if I stop in traffic it goes right up to 210-215. My fans dont kick on till 220. I have been told that this is normal, but I have noticed that the coolant has a tendency to come out the resovoir over flow. I thought it might be the cap, so I ordered another cap, this did not fix it. Over time in trying to fix the problem I replaced the water pump, thermostat and temp gauge sending unit. I also flushed the system. It still gets hot and comes out the over flow. Please help.

Answer
It IS normal. The fan comes on at 229*. It sounds to me like you are probably over filling the system. It should NOT be filled to the top of the tank. If it is, coolant will leak out as it expands from heat. Are you sure that it is coming out of the overflow? It could also be a cracked tank.
