Pontiac: ABS light and traction light on, pontiac grand prix, pontiac grand prix gt

Question
Hi Harold,

I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT, and one day when I went to start the car it didn't fully start, kind of stuttered a bit. It finally started and I went to drive off, when suddenely my ABS light came on along with the traction light. The pattern seems to be that when I start the car and it is stationary these lights only come on during system check and then they turn off. However, as soon as the car starts rolling they come back on immediately. I had a diagnostic check done by a friend of mine and I was told that the ABS sensors appear to be working correctly. He told me that it could be a rear bearing that's gone bad and is changing the wheel pitch, in turn setting off the sensors. Is this a possibility? Anyhow, I would appreciate it if you could troubleshoot this problem and send me any ideas or suggestions on what the problem might be and how much the repair may cost.

Thank you
I will be waiting for your reply

Rick

Answer
If your friend diagnosed it correctly he should have gotten codes out of the ABS module that would tell you the area of the problem. What he told you is partially correct but usually it would be one of the front bearings being bad. I can not trouble shoot a car over the computer. I need to see the car, get the codes and do some specialized testing to trouble shoot it. Your friend should get the codes after the light comes on without shutting the car off. Then dignose it from there. If he can not do it take it to the dealer, we can!
