Saab: 1994 Saab 900S tapping from clutch, 1994 saab 900s, clutch disc

Question
I have a small (hopefully in inexpensive) question.
I quit smoking two days ago so my mind wasnt quite on what i was doing. I got in my Saab 5 speed, started it up and slammed it into reverse. Forgetting all about the clutch.
Parking brake was on so of course it died. I started it back up and now there is a tapping sound coming from the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel area. When i press the clutch in it slowly comes to a stop after approximately 1 second. My question is if this sound would be one of the bearings on the front or something more internal? Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Answer
Robert:
My hands on experience does NOT cover your model SAAB. However, I am assuming a degree of similarity with earlier SAABS with which I AM familiar. The items that would have been stressed by your maneuver would be the pressure plate, clutch disc, reverse gear,(within the transmission) (didn't it make a harsh chattering sound?) clutch shaft, and associated bearings. Since the sound goes away when you depress the clutch, that means that the clutch disc and shaft as well as the internal idler shaft inside the gearbox all stop rotating. Except for the clutch disc, all the other components are of super-strong treated steel..the disc is constructed of thinner pressed steel with shock absorbing springs. Since you have not indicated any other problem with the drive mechanism, I would guess that the clutch disc has deformed a bit in a non-critical way and is hitting something as it rotates. As long as all other functions are unchanged and working well, I would therefore not worry.

              Hope this helps............
