Toyota: cold start idle, best gas mileage, toyota engines

Question
I have an brand new tacoma 2X4 2.4L automatic with 4,000 miles on it. When I start it with the engine cold, regardless of outside temperature, the engine goes up to 1750 rpm and then slowly idles down as it warms up. It bothers me because I can hear the valves tick for a second or two until it gets oil pressure. The dealer says it's normal and it can't be adjusted down because of the computer. What do you think? Thank You for your time.

Answer
Hi Don,

As far as I know, that's normal.  Mine does it too.  It will also stay in lower gears longer when its cold, reving to higher rpms before a shift.  That's also normal.  Toyota engines are built to withstand higher rpms when cold in order to warm up faster.  That's what the dealer told me when I asked about it when mine was new, LOL.

As you drive it, the computer will learn your driving habits and it will optimize itself to get the best gas mileage and performance.  Mine decreased the amount of time at high idle during this process.  It takes 3-4 months for that to happen tho.

Enjoy your new Toy!
