Toyota: 1999 4Runner, 4runner sr5, rear shocks

Question
I'm thinking of buying a '99 4Runner SR5, but it does not have a key with a chip?  No keyless entry on that model?  Vehicle also has a heavy-duty towing package.  Should I worry about overwear on the transmission or engine?  Has 64,000 miles.  Any other problem areas i should look for?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Tom,

Keyless was only available on the Limited, I'm not sure it was even an option in 99 on the SR5.  It didn't get very popular on Toyotas until 2001 or so.  SR5 means fewest accessories in Toy-lingo.

If its a V6, then it should be rated for 5000lbs towing, just like the equivalent Tacoma.  If its a 4Cylinder, then I doubt they were very successful with heavy duty towing, LOL.  It wouldn't hurt to check the transmission fluid (assuming its automatic?) to see if its burnt at all.  That's the most common problem with HD towing without an auxiliary transmission cooler.  If it has an aux cooler, it should be fine.

Also check the rear shocks, to make sure they aren't worn out/leaking.  HD towing causes a lot of wear on the rear suspension.  Make sure the brake drums/rotors haven't been turned too many times (beyond spec), that's another common problem with towing.

64K is about average mileage for a 99, it sounds like a very nice SUV.  Good luck!
