Volkswagen: 71 VW Superbug wont go into gear, clutch plate, clutch cable

QUESTION: Hello, My question is we were riding in our 71 Superbug today and all of a sudden it would not go into gear, It is running and we can move the stick into each gear but nothing, bug won't move...Help this one is a new problem for us, where do we start??? Thanks Barbara

I would check the clutch cable.  Does the pedal move freely up and down?

QUESTION: Ok just checked that,not that, the pedal is firm,the cable is fine all gears will shift into place,so what we are thinking it is,might be the clutch plate broke,what do you think about that? If so am I right in saying we need to pull the engine and go inside the transmission and check...Thanks so much for all your info,it is a blessing...Barbara

Does it go into each gear smoothly with the engine running AND not depressing the clutch?

I apologize for all the questions, but this is a unique situation.

You should get a little motion or some loud scraping sound, despite.
