Volkswagen: Superbeetle dies when put into reverse., rust spots, problem thanks

Question
I have had this 71 super for a few months now, and am attempting to
somewhat restore it into better shape. I have started with the mechanics
(replacing old wires and hoses, patching up rust spots) and replacing some
interior cosmetics. I have just recently brought it back into working condition
and got it to start. I wanted to take it for a spin to make sure i could commute
safely in it. I pulled out of my driveway and got up to 2nd gear stopped(stop
sign) and proceeded up a hill. A few seconds after i got into second gear, it
started to sputter and lurch so i pulled over, and it died. I popped into neutral
and rolled it back down the hill. It started again and i drove it back to my
driveway. Then I tried to put it into reverse and it died. It will turn on and go
into first but whenever I move the clutch to reverse it dies. (i can even move
the clutch in and out of reverse and it will almost die then turn on again) Any
thoughts???
I appreciate the help, Thanks

Answer
Hi Caleb,

It is most likely that your reverse lights cable (it is black with an in-line fuse) that should be connected to the + on your coil is  plugged into the - on your coil.

The fix:  Switch the reverse lights wire to the - terminal on the coil.

This will fix your problem

Thanks,

Ron
