Volkswagen: 1977 Bus, air leak, manual pdf

I recently purchased a 1977 bus.  It died on me, and needed a new alternator.  I began to notice it was losing power (gas pedal all the way to the floor and nothing).  I tuned it up and changed the battery.  It still does not to seem to have as much power as the day I bought it.  Its a 2.0 engine, so the valves do not need adjustment (or so i have been told).  Any ideas what to check next?

 This could be many things.  First check for any obvious disconnected and/or cracked hoses that could cause a "false air" leak.  Then I would go here and do the checks starting on page 18:
