Volkswagen: 1972 VW Bus, spark, plug

Question
Hello,

I am hoping for a answer to my problem.  After a valve adjustment, oil change/tune up, I drove my bus about 1 mile and a spark blew out and will not seat back into the head.  Do I have to remove the engine to repair this, and why would this happen.

Thank you for your time,

Beckie and "Alice" the bus

Answer
Beckie,
The cause was probably poor reinstallation of the spark plug during the tuneup; i.e. cross-threading, using too much torque, installing them dry, or installing when the engine was too warm.  It's so easy to do, especially if there was some pre-existing damage from spark plug installation carelessness. Therefore, it will be hard to prove this shop is totally to blame.
Now, to fix the problem. Yes, the engine must come out, the one head removed, and then the threads of the bad spark plug hole repaired.  Unless you are VERY handy at machinist work, you'll need to take it to another shop.  I recommend you ask for "Time-Sert" solid bushing inserts.  They tend to stay in place much better than "Helicoils".  See http://www.timesert.com/
