Volkswagen: 1969 VW Transporter oil cooler replacement, fan shroud, heat problems

Question
I have a severe oil leak coming from around the fan shroud in my recently aquired 1969 Campmobile.  My suspicion is a faulty oil cooler.  Is there a way to check and replace the oil cooler without removing the engine ?  I hope to save some time and money here.
 Thank you.

Answer
Hi David,

You do have to remove the engine in the transporter to remove the oil cooler.

In the 1969 models, the cooler is in the actual fan housing which causes heat problems.  The newer models have the oil cooler on the outside which provides better cooling to #3 cylinder.

Good news is that there are only 6 bolts holding the engine on, and it takes about 1-2 hours to remove.

Good Luck, keep me posted.
