Answer
Hi Louise,

I believe you are correct.

a) This sounds certainly like a bad head gasket.  Typically, head gaskets go slowly.  So it is most likely, you bought the vehicle with a leaky head gasket.  Again, the problem probably existed before you bought it.

b) If there was excess oil in the engine, and you did not add any to it, most likely the coolant and oil are mixing together, as there is no head gasket to seal off the two.   The white smoke is also a sign of a bad head gasket.

c) You can check your oil dipstick and see if the oil is a white 'frothy' color, if so, you definately have water in your oil.  Further, you can look under the radiator cap at the fluid. (with engine cold)  If you see oil droplets in there, you can indeed confirm it is your head-gasket.

d) I am not too sure what you mean by "realeased water on rod".  If you can be more specific, I may be able to tell you if they are related.   Water on the electrics, could have very well caused a short-circuit.

I would consider bringing the car to a VW Dealership, and pay them to do a full inspection of the vehicle, and they will provide you with a comprehensive report as to it's problems.  It is around $150.00 USD,  but WELL worth it.

Once you have this report, you can go back to the facility where you bought it with confirmation of it's problems.

So, wrapping up,  don't spend anymore money for repairs on this vehicle.   (except for a VW Diagnosis)  Once you have confirmation of the problem, the next step is to check your warranty and ensure that it covers a blown head-gasket. (which it should, after 2 weeks)   If you feel that the facility where you bought your Golf lied to you, demand that the proper repairs done at a more reputable garage. One that you are comfortable with.   Don't let them take advantage of you!

Good Luck, and let me know how you make out.
