Volkswagen: intermitent dying, irregular intervals, repair history

1987 scirocco 16v, repair history unknown (bought used)

symptoms: dies at irregular intervals, only consitant condition is at low speeds, say 20 mph and under. gives no indications it will die, just does. highly irregular as well, can go days on end with no problems. if i wait 5-10 minutes, car will fire right up with no ill effects. replaced the fuel pump and transfer pump to no avail. does not overheat, although i suspect it IS heat related (ignition system? thinking distributor) anyways, thats about as exact a description as i can give, i will check back often to give any other info you might require. thanks in advance for any ideas you might have.

the distributer could be the problem, or more to the point the "hall sender" in the distributer. if you open the bonnet, locate the dizzy, see if the black three pin connector on the side of it moves under light pressure. also with the engine running, just check if it moves by hand, and it may also cut out at this point. hope this helps.
