Volkswagen: 72 bus elec problem, light flicker, battery cables

QUESTION: dear mr wolff,i have a 72 bay which has the generator light "on" on the dash.due to the bus standing idle for some years prioy to us buying i changed distrbutar(complete),plugs & leads,battery,dynmo& last of all the regulator but the light still stays on.short of replacing the unit with a alternator i'm at a loss.please help

Does the light flicker when it is on, and than go out after you accelerate?


Or is it solid and always on?

Hi Terry,

First thing you should do is remove the battery cables and clean all the contacts that the generator is connected to.  (including the voltage regulator). That is located in the back of the engine compartment on the passengers side.

Once the contacts are nice and shiny, you should have no problem.  Probably corroded from sitting for so long.
