some one offered to help when i went to replace my head gasket he did not keep his marks for the timing belts and now the distributur cap placement and firing order is lost. a vw mec. said to line every thing up tdc all the belts are lined cam shaft is with distrib position acorreding to the chiltons manual the distrb  has to be in the wrong position or its firing order i dont know at this point i am confused i dont even think that the firing order in the manual is right they say it is 1324 my owner manual shows but does not say 1342 so how do i time and align these thing correctly. right now cap is parallel with 2 closest to piston 1 @tdc distrbutor also has hall sensor/ cam positioning sensor book called it both

Answer
when you remove the dizzy cap, there should be a plastic trim (maybe be missing). under the trim there is a line etched into the dizzy housing. with the engine on top dead, the rotor arm should point to this line. sorry for delay. moved house and computer blew up.
