Volkswagen: 1998 Jetta power windows, passenger windows, broken wires

Question
    We have a 1998 jetta GSL.  The 'the drivers'
side switches, became intermittent a few weeks ago.  Up/down drivers'and passenger windows seemed to work at their will.  Driver's window went down and stopped.  Passenger window went down
from 'Drivers' side' but only went up from 'passenger' side switch.  

    Most say that it is a 'switch' problem.
I hate to spend $60 dollars for a switch only to
find that it is something else.

before spending money on new switches, i would pull back the rubber boot on both front doors (between body and door, near hinges) and check for broken wires, if any are found reconnect them to the correct coloured wires and retry the windows. otherwise it would be down to trying a new switch.
