Volvo: whistling noise when accelerating, volvo xc 90, ntsb web

Question
I just bought a 2004 volvo xc 90 T6 awd with 48000 miles. When I accelerate there is a whistling noise coming from the engine compartment (driver side).I checked the air filter box, reconnected the hoses, tightened what I could and thought I had solved the problem. The noise is still here. I tried to put in neutral while driving and accelerating. It still makes the noise in neutral. The noise is not really obvious with the car stopped and the hood open, but it is ennoying while driving. I di some research on the internet and found that a plastic nipple of the PVC system can crack or become loose and create a leak from the crank case ventilation system that may cause a whistling noise. Do you know anything about this symptom and how hard would it be to fix it by myself. Did I make a mistake by buying a 2004 XC 90 T6 AWD with 48000? I have a family with 3 children and one is an infant. Is there a safety issue? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Jean,
You sound as if you are on the right track. The PCV system does sometimes make a whistle sound when clogged. If you can hear it at idle sometime pull the dip stick up and see if it stops. That would indicate a clogged Breather box. If the breather box needs replacement the intake manifold will need to be removed, a lot of work, but not too bad to do.
The 04's have not been out long enough to tell how well they will last and what problems they have.
I have only heard of good things about safety. I think that you could try the NTSB web site for saftey related issues.
