Volvo: 2000 s70 blinking arrow for winter mode, volvo dealer, winter mode

Question
My daughters s70 has had problems with the electronic dash, the odeometer will suddenly go to all ---- and other info will also not appear, then last weekend her arrow for winter mode starting blinking and won't stop, the car is very sluggish.  She took it to Volvo dealer in Melbourne and they said it was the battery cable, was melted, ordered one and replaced.  No change. The car is about 2 hours from our regular volvo dealer in Ocala, is the car okay to drive there?  After spending 105.00 to have it diagnosed in Melbourne, the mechanic said "we can start with the cable".
Please help, we have had all major services, 105,000 and had timing belt etc replaced in september.

Answer
Fran,
Well the cables have been a problem and a good place to start. When the cables are no good not enough power is put back into the battery from the charging system. I have seen more often the ABS control unit go out and then the speed signal from the wheel, trans do not "pass through" the control unit and the dash goes blank. Have your shop make sure that there are not any codes in the ABS system. With all the service you have had done at your dealer they should take some time and fix this problem. I also know of one car that needed a new dash cluster because it had burned out.
