Volvo: wont start, regina system, volvo 740

car stopped, won't start. 1990 volvo 740 wagon. smelled like gas when it died. what could it be. I'd really appriciate it if you could let me know.

See if the fuel pump is working while the engine is cranking. Feel the pump and or loosen the fuel inlet line and see if gas squirts out. Measure the fuel pressure to see if there is enough fuel to start the car. Your car may have only one pump in the tank a Regina system, they sometimes have fuel pump problems.
