Volvo: 93 volvo 240 wont start, vacuum hoses, pan gasket

Question
THE DAUGHTER'S INFO:
About a year ago, the car started revving at stop signs and stop lights. It was
only a sound though. A few months later, in addition to the revving sound,
the car would lurch, as if the automatic drive didn't care I was breaking.  It
would sometimes shudder and try to lurch so hard that it would stall out or it
would rev so hard I would have to press on the break as hard as I could to
stop it from jumping forward. Finally, a month or so ago, it got even worse. It
was hard to start my car. I would have to floor the pedal to get enough gas in
the engine for it to start. As I drove away, my car would act like I was about to
run out of gas. I'd floor it again. Even when the pedal was to the metal, it
would only go 5mph, then the gas would really hit the engine and I was on
my way. Pretty much under 20 mph, I was having this "not enough gas
getting to engine" problem.

THE MOM'S INFO:
We have taken my daughter's Volvo 240 to a repair shop twice. The first time,
about a month ago, the car was lurching and sputtering at stop signs, had a
hard time starting. They cleaned battery terminals, replaced engine breather
hose, two vacuum hoses, two heater hoses, checked all fluids and topped off,
replaced a timing belt, repaired open circuit to front running light ($897.87 -
$650 in labor). Last week, the car wouldn't start at all. It made an effort but
conked out after shaking and coughing. It had to be towed in. They replaced
both fuel pumps and filter and an auto trans pan gasket ($712.46, $275
labor). This morning, the car wouldn't start again. It repeats an effort,
shudders then stops. After about 20 mins., I went back out and tried it again.
After three tries, it started but was so rough my entire body shook with it. I
also smelled slight gas fumes. Once it was up and running, it sounded as
smooth as silk. I'm very apprehensive about taking it back to this repair shop.
Almost $2000 later and it's still not starting properly. Please help!

Answer
Claudia,
There should be some fault code(s) set in the engine management system that will lead to the fault. I would say find a shop that works on Volvos as they have the knowlege to test your car for Volvo related problems. Techs that are not familure with the car will not always do their best work.
