4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 98 ford expo bw 4406 transfer case, ford expo, speedometer gear

Question
QUESTION: i have a po500 error code. vss malfuntion the dealer told he i need a new TC. the speedo, trip and milage gauges do not work. It shifts hard and TC motor shifts to 2l,4l,4x4 and runs fine. the dealer said that a gear is missing inside of the TC.??? the abs sensor is good, sensor on TC replaced and sensor on the diff. was replaced. still no luck.   CAN YOU HELP??

ANSWER: The speedometer gear is a ring inside the transfer case all the way at the back on the tailshaft of the TC. If that gear is broken or stripped it can be replaced by a good transmission shop without replacing a $500.00 transfer case. If you want to check it yourself, go under the truck, look on the right side of the back of the TC and see the cable or wires going in. there is a small bolt in the side of it or in a clip, remove this and pull it out and look at the gear to see if the diagnosis was correct

QUESTION: the bolt that you suggest, is that on the top where the sensor goes in to? the sensor had a plastic gear on it, is that what you are talking about??  . Thank you sir.

Answer
ok, the sensor gear is ok, Now look inside the hole in the transfer case and see if there is a gear there. I will have long gear teeth probably running around the gear instead of across it but as long as there is a gear at all in there is what I am looking for
