4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: storage, long term storage, metal residue

Question
I have a 99 GMC Jimmy and need to store it for 3 years. What specifically do I have to do to prep it for long term storage? I have asked this question on this site before with no response..Thanks

Answer
Hi Mark.  Sorry your queston was not answered previously.  A lot of the answer depends on where your are going to store the vehicle.  The basic things you should do is have the vehicle protected from the enviorment, in a garage or some other enclosed area.  You should raise the vehicle and put it on stands or other support to keep all the weight off the tires.  You should disconnect the battery.  If the temperature will be below freezing you should make sure that the coolant is well below whatever temperature you anticipate.  You should completely drain the crankcase and then replace with new oil (oil that has been used for any time has some metal residue in it and can eventually rust). Make sure that you completely drain, or add anti-freeze to the container for your windshield washer.  Carefully wash the entire vehicle and then apply a heavy coat of quality vehicle wax.  If you have leather seats clean them with saddle soap and then coat them with a leather preserver.  I realize this sounds like a lot of work but if the vehicle is going to be unattended it is necessary.  Let me know if you have further questions.  Happy new year.  Bud
