Jeep: Ping/knock from engine, air intake hose, jeep wrangler

Question
QUESTION: Hey.
I've developed a knock/ping in my 1994 Jeep Wrangler 4WD.  I had the head resurfaced last year from an overheat, and I suspect that on the re installation of the head, someone may have hit or damaged a couple lifters, although Im not sure, thus the question.  I was reading up on the EGR valve, but have not found one on my Jeep, so I do not think that is the issue either.   I have also had a complete oil flush, hoping that there might just be something caught up in the head, but that did nothing.  Could the lifters be the issue?, and if so, how much would this cost to fix?

Thanks

Jon.
ANSWER: What engine do you have?  How many miles?  Where does the noise come from, does it sound like a tick or a deeper knock?  Does it do it only at idle, or under acceloration?  Get back and let me know, God Bless!

QUESTION: I have a 1994 Jeep Wrangler S 2.5L 150cid L4 AWD
Its got about 125,000miles on it.   The sound is coming from the cylinder head it sounds like.  Between where you put in oil, and where the air intake hose is.
It happens at all intervals.  It starts out quiet, then gets louder, as if something is being shifted out of place, then it stops, as if it got knocked back into place. Like centrifugal force.
I was pokin around at the things I "do" know about engines, and took out the air filter.  It was covered in some beige sloppy goop.  I think that must have been residue from the last oil flush I got.  I cleaned the filter out and ordered a new one -- that solved my slight sputtering problem.  hehe

Hope this all helps.

Thanks

Jon

Answer
Hey Jon, The only thing I could think of is you may have a lifter going bad.  I would try changing the oil with a thicker weight and see that helps with the noise.  If its a lifter a thicker weight oil might make it pump up better.  Hope this helps you!
