Suzuki: idle problem, vacuum leaks, pvc valve

Question
QUESTION: Hello again,
I'm the guy you just helped with the cooling issue, now I'm having a problem with my idle.  While driving the car seems the same that its alway felt, but if I push in the clutch to coast down hills the idle goes up and down, but if I keep the clutch in and alow the car to come to a stop the idle will come back down.  why would it go up while I'm rolling at idle and then go down while sitting at idle?  Twice when stopping the idle dropped low enough  the engine felt like it was stumbling.  1995 sidekick jx 5spd 16v.  I checked the pvc valve and the egr valve and they seem to be ok.  Also I've listened for vacuum leaks and cant hear any.  It does burn oil and has a bit lower compression in #2 cyclinder. Fuel pump runs when I turn the key. I'm ready to scrap this thing!!!

ANSWER: You need to get a Suzuki factory manual, that has all the set up procedures for the idle system.  I had an 89 8valve sidekick years ago, and could never get the idle to work right until I used the procedures in the factory book.  No, they are not the same on a 16 valve. the injection system has evolved further, and I know from experience that none of the aftermarket manuals cover this.

QUESTION: is this a problem thats going to be more anoying  until I get it fixed or will it shut my car down on me?

ANSWER: It's just an idle issue, and as you have experienced, it is only and issue when not maintaining road speed and accelerating.  You're seeing problems where none exist.  Mechanical hypochondria like this is unnecessary.  Just fix stuff as necessary, after all it's just a piece of machinery.

QUESTION: sorry for the trouble,  Its just that I need this car 7 days a week for paper delivery and if something happens that I cant fix in one afternoon that quickly I can loose my job and a reliable income for my family.  So when something seems wrong like seeing the tach moving all night when its not supposed to it worries me to no end.

So other than a nervous attack and /tach there's no immediate problem with this issue?

I wish i had a way to speak to an expert like you in live chat, that would really calm my mind.

thank you scotty,  I'll try to pick your mind only when really necessary.

Answer
If all it does is idle strangely, or fail to idle occasionally (or regularly), but runs fine otherwise, it's not an area for much concern.
It has a "bypass" passage that isn't controlled by the throttle pedal, that uses the throttle position sensor and a couple of other inputs such as whether the A/C is on, and engine temperature, etc to calculate what the idle speed should be, and run an electronic device to either open or close the passage accordingly.  If any of these signals are "strange" due to misadjustment, or wear on the throttle position switch, for example, then the system will "believe" that the idle speed should be different, and attempt to adjust it accordingly.  It's all electronics, and if the input is "lying" to it, it will respond as if the input "lie" is correct.
If it runs fine in normal at speed driving, it's not something to be particularly concerned with, and if it restarts and runs fine when it occasionally dies, that's a sign that the majority of the system is ok, and just the idle portion of the system is in need of attention.  Usually, it's the throttle position sensor (or sender) being either out of adjustment, or no longer capable of consistently sending the correct signal due to internal wear.  Try adjusting it first using the factory procedures, and use the diagnosis procedure in the manual to determine the next step(s).
I know the factory manual is pricey, but it's the only one that contains this information and setting procedures, and the procedures for yours, being later, and a 16valve, are nowhere the same as mine were.  I gave the manual to the new owner when I sold the sidekick, and don't remember the procedure well enougth to advise you.  All I do remember is that it was not something particularly easy to commit to memory..  The Haines, Chilton, etc manuals are useless in this particular case, don't attempt to use them for this.
It made me a little crazy initially when my 89 sidekick was doing the same to me in the middle nineties.  I had been working on VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche for about twenty years at that point, and they just didn't have those system issues, and it took a while before I realized that I had to get and use a factory manual.
