Suzuki: follow up, 1996 suzuki sidekick, suzuki sidekick

Question
QUESTION: Dave,
I cant pass a smog test in Las Vegas, NV ( 1996 Suzuki Sidekick) cuz the "check engine" light does "NOT" light up...ever....even when 1st starting the engine when all the other warning lights light up. No other codes show on the scanner. Ya think this is merely a burnt out bulb? how fun are they to replace? Thanx !

ANSWER: If I remember correctly each bulb is in a holder that rotates about a quarter turn and comes out.  It's a distinct pain to get to it without pulling the instrument cluster partially loose, but it's not that bad.....  Get a chiltons of haines book, they are better than nothing, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Suzuki factory manual.

QUESTION: Thanx for answering the question regarding 'How fun" it is to replace a blub....but the question "Ya think this is merely a burnt out bulb?" wasn't addressed.......I need to know if there could be some other reason in the whole computer/circutry/ check engine/ code thingy. Thanx again

Answer
The only way you will ever know for sure is to remove the bulb and measure it's continuity with an ohmmeter.  Unless you have access to a factory level scan tool that has the capacity to measure the resistance of the bulb via the computer.  Most do not do this, they merely toggle the bulb on and off.  The only alternative is to see if the bulb connector has power on one side and ground on the other with the ignition on. Personally I think taking the bulb out is easiest.
