Tips on Buying Cars: Advice?, honda reliability, gm models

Question
Hello, I am currently looking at a 1999 Cadillac Deville on autotrader.com. My question is, are these typically reliable cars? To be honest I think I've found my dream car but I don't want to buy a lemon. Any advice would be great.

Answer
From what I have read they are good cars, I know from experience that build quality seems sub par on some late 90's GM models... but the engine seems sound on average. You may wish to look for a 2000 though, as they were redesigned that year and made many improvements. You shouldn't expect honda reliability, but average or slightly better reliability. It is a caddy so repairs will be decently expensive, fuel mileage is only decent (due to weight and engine size) - but keep in mind this is based on research and experience - every car is different. You have to be careful and have a used vehicle inspected by a mechanic or yourself if you must.

The web pages above should help you in your purchase. Check out the 2000+ if the prices fit within your range. Otherwise, if the car checks out mechanically... there is no reason for it to be unreliable.

So get it checked out, if this is the car you really want, it should be as reliable as any other domestic v8 - which seem to do pretty well up to 130000-150000 miles, but if it's miles are higher than that - I'd be leary.

Good Luck!
